Class Two—Decorative Stitches, Applique and Programming – Evening

The title says it all. If you purchased a machine with all the nice decorative stitches, then you continue on with this class and we’ll show you how and where to use them.  We will do a “repair” and show you how you can fix tears in fabric and clothing.

Also learn how to program sets of stitches to use together both now and latter.  For instance, sign your name to your work.

Please bring: Your sewing machine, accessories and book, spool of pastel thread and scissors.

Class One – Basic Machine Operations – Afternoon

For everyone with a machine purchased at Viking Sewing Gallery. Come in and learn how to sew on different fabrics.

We’ll help you to learn all the parts and feet that come with your machine too

Please bring: Your sewing machine, accessories and book, spool of pastel thread and scissors.

ADULT BASIC SEWING–Applique’d Tote

In this Basic Sewing Fundamentals class, you will be making this tote bag with an applique’.  It is an over-sized tote the size of a paper grocery bag.   You will learn how to measure and cut accurately, sew straight lines, press,  use a fusible web for applique’, and zigzag curved edges for applique’.

SUPPLY LIST

  • 1 ¼ yd. canvas or denim fabric  (If you get denim and it is not heavy, you will need 1 1/4 yd. of fusible interfacing, also.  You do not need the interfacing if your fabric is heavy.)
  • Basic sewing kit
  • Sewing machine if you have one—bring all of its parts and pieces.  If you do not have a machine, you may use ours.  You will need a plastic 15J bobbin if you borrow ours–they are available in the Viking Sewing Gallery for $.75 each.
  • Inspira Fusible Web (NOT the narrow strips)
  • 1 sheet of plastic needlepoint canvas or a rigid piece of plastic or cardboard that can be used to make the bottom flat
  • Sewing thread to match the fabric
  • We will supply the fabric scraps for your applique’d flower and the embroidery thread for stitching it.  If you want something other than what is on the sample bag, bring your own.

Appliqued Tote Bag

ADULT BASIC SEWING–Pull-on Pants

This week you will learn how to use a commercial pattern to make a garment.  You will learn how to pre-measure the pattern to ensure a correct fit, choose the correct cutting line, cut smooth lines, use notches for matching connecting seams, sew 5/8″ seams, apply a seam finish, press during garment construction for a professional result, sew an elastic casing, insert elastic, and make a machine hem.

Supply List

  • Sewing Pattern for pull-on pants—buy it by the HIP measurement on the back of the pattern envelope—NOT the size you normally buy in ready-to-wear
  • Basic sewing kit
  • Sewing machine if you have one—bring all of its parts and pieces.  If you do not have a machine, you may use ours.  You will need a 15J bobbin if you borrow ours.  Bring an empty bobbin for your machine if bringing your own.
  • Fabric and notions as required by your pattern.  If you do not know how to read the back of the pattern envelope for supplies, you can stop by the Viking Sewing Gallery for help or ask a JoAnn’s person at the cutting counter for assistance.  Match your thread to the fabric.

Preparation before class:

After you have purchased your fabric, zigzag over the raw cut edges at each end or hand overcast if you do not have a sewing machine.  Then wash and dry the fabric as you would the finished garment.  This will preshrink the fabric and get rid of any sizing.  If the fabric comes out of the dryer wrinkled, then press out the wrinkles with an iron.

Open your pattern and cut the pattern pieces apart—do not cut on the lines; just cut the pattern tissue between the pieces to separate them from one another.  You can smooth them out, stack pieces, fold gently, and place in a large ZipLock bag to bring to class.  Bring the whole pattern envelope and instructions, too!

Read through the pattern instruction sheet.  If you don’t understand all of it, that is OK.  At least, you have a little familiarity before coming to class.

s

Embroidery Basics

This class gives basic instructions on how to achieve beautiful embroidery using your new Husqvarna Viking embroidery machine.  Please bring your machine, embroidery unit, USB stick with designs, design book, bobbin filled with bobbin fill, and embroidery thread.

ADULT BASIC SEWING–Drawstring skirt

As your sewing skills build, class #3 will teach you how to once again sew straight lines, apply a seam finish to seam allowances, sew a band for a hem, stitch a casing, turn tubes for a drawstring, and insert it and elastic for a flexible waistband while you make a drawstring skirt.

SUPPLY LIST

Please note:  Fabrics chosen for both the main portion and the band of the skirt need to be soft–not crisp.  They need to drape so that they will hang close to the body.  If they are stiff, the gathered top will stick out and make you look larger.

  • Main fabric—You need enough fabric to go around your hip plus at least 6” of ease.  If purchasing 42” wide fabric, your hip measurement can only be up to 36”, or your will need to buy two lengths of fabric.  You will need fabric to measure the desired length MINUS 5”.  For larger hips, you need twice that amount.  If you are using 54” or 60” wide fabric, you may be able to get by with just one length.
  • Contrast fabric—This is for the bottom band and ties.  You will need ½ yard if using 42” wide fabric and your hip is 36” or less.  Otherwise, you will need 1 yard.
  • ½ yard of ¾” wide no-roll elastic, depending upon your waist measurement.  If your waist is larger than 36”, you will need ¾ yd.
  • All-purpose sewing thread to match your fabric
  • Bobbin *
  • If you are bringing your own sewing machine, bring all of its feet and accessories*
  • Basic sewing kit—see separate list
  • 1 medium or large safety pin
  • 1 button that is ½” across (We will not be sewing it to anything; it is just to make a buttonhole.)
  • A small scrap of tear away or wash away stabilizer
  • If you have a Viking, a Left Edge Topstitching foot is helpful to have for stitching a casing.*

*These items are available in the Viking Sewing Gallery.

PREPARATION BEFORE COMING TO CLASS

Zigzag over the cut edges of the fabric (not the selvages) to enclose the stray threads and to keep the fabric from raveling.  Then wash and dry the fabric in the same manner that you intend to care for the finished skirt.  Press out any wrinkles.
