FUNdamental Sewing #3

This class is for adults wishing to learn basic sewing skills.  You will learn about Fabrics, notions and “tools of the trade”, as well as basic sewing machine use, while Creating a basic garment.  It is never too late to learn a skill that will last a lifetime.  Viking Sewing Machines are provided in the classroom.

In this first four week session you will create a drawstring tote bag and pajama pant.  You can then sign up to continue your learning with another four week session where you will create a top with set in sleeves, the instructors are available to help pick your pattern and give advice on fabric choices.

Further continuation of this series will teach you to put in a zipper, a great skill to learn that can be applied to clothing as well as tote bags and pillows.  After completion of this series of classes  you may continue to enjoy your new found or refreshed sewing skills completing garments or projects of your choice with the teachers available for assistance when you need them.

Snowflake Scarf

Make this comfy, cozy scarf sparkle with metallic thread! The pretty snowflakes are suspended from ribbons of decorative stitching and the embroidery is reversible so the scarf is pretty on both sides.

Supplies:

  • Topstitch needle, size 90
  • 10 in. any color fleece fabric
  • Robison-Anton thread- to match fabric
  • 3 spools all purpose thread same color as fleece, to use on serger
  • 2 empty bobbins
  • marking pen

Hexagon Placemat

Learn how to cut and sew perfect hexagons. Make a completed placemat in class and then finish set at home. The IN-R-Form batting alternative gives nice definition to the quilting.

Supplies:

  • 3/4  yds of fabric, if you want to do reversible then get  3/4  yd of 2 different colors.  Prewash to shrink because if not pre-shrunk can pucker after washing.

Serger Owner’s Class 3 – Don’t fear the Serger – 5:00 p.m. – 1/22/14

Congratulations, you made it to the Coverstitch!   In this class you will learn to convert your serger for the coverstitch and chain stitch: the different threading process, and the needle
positions. We will also try some of the different feet that you can use with
the coverstitch. No worries though because you no longer Fear the Serger.

In this class you will (surprise) rethread your machine!  From there we will learn gathering, and converting to 2 and 3 thread stitches including the beautiful rolled edge.  Your confidence will soar and your imagination will explode with ideas when you see what your serger can do.

Attendance at “Serger Owner’s Class 1 – Boot Camp” is a prerequisite.

No longer will your serger sit in the box collecting dust. In this class you will learn to thread, rethread and identify where your threading went wrong.  By the end of class you will master the 4 thread overlock and be on your way to beautiful professional looking seams.
