Machine Basics–Viking Owner’s Class #1

Using your new sewing machine will be so much fun once you learn how to use all of its features.  We’ll show you how to sew on different types of fabrics, sew two machine hems, make a buttonhole, and even more techniques as time allows.  Also included in the class is information on threads, needles, and machine maintenance.

 

Bring your sewing machine, foot control, power cord, all of the accessories that came with your machine, owner’s manual, scissors, a spool of all-purpose sewing thread (100% cotton or 100% polyester and NOT white or black),  extra universal needles, paper and pen for notes, and eye glasses (if you need them).

 

In order for us to start class on time, please arrive 5-10 minutes before class is to begin to allow you to have time to set up.

 

If you signed up for this class but later find that you will be unable to attend, please let us know well in advance so that we can call a person on our waiting list.  If there are too few to sign up, we reserve the right to cancel the class.   Also, please be kind to those with fragrance sensitivity by refraining from wearing colognes and perfumes.  Thank you.

Embroidery Basics–Viking Owner’s Class #3

The wonderful world of embroidery is now available to you with your new machine!  You will learn how to set it up for embroidery,  load a design onto the machine, determine the appropriate stabilizers, hoop the project, and  stitch out the design.

 

Please bring your sewing machine, the embroidery unit, foot control, power cord, all of the accessories and hoops that came with your machine, the USB stick that came with the machine, owner’s manual, scissors, 2-3 spools of 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread, size 75 embroidery needle or a 90 topstitch needle, a bobbin wound with bobbin thread, paper and pen for notes and your eye glasses (if you need them).

You must be able to perform the basic operations of your machine to take this class.  If you cannot, please complete the Machine Basics:  Viking Owner’s Class #1 prior to registering.

 

Heirloom Techniques #4

Class #4 is a continuation of our heirloom sewing techniques series.   You will make samples on squares of your fabric to learn how to hemstitch with a special foot, how to make perfect binding, and how to do machine cutwork.

Supply List

  • 60 wt. white cotton thread*
  • 60 or 70 universal needle*
  • Cutwork needles*
  • Wing needle*
  • Open toe foot*
  • Spanish Hemstitch Foot*
  • Micro tweezers*
  • Blunt-tipped sharp scissors*
  • Spray starch
  • Basic sewing kit including seam gauge, sharp scissors, etc.
  • Erasable marking pen*
  • Rotary cutter*
  • Rotary cutting ruler*
  • Aqua Magic or Water Works stabilizer*
  • Sewing machine, foot control, power cord, and accessories and feet that came with the machine*
  • If you have an embroidery machine, bring its embroidery unit and a 150 x 150 or 200 x 200 hoop.*  If you do not, we will let you borrow one of ours.  Just let us know in advance.

This month Kerry will show us how to create pop up embroidery designs.

Bring your computer, dongle and USB stick for your embroidery machine.

No charge for this class if your software was purchase at this store.

Decorative Stitching–Viking Owner’s Class #2

You have all of those fancy stitches on your new machine, but do you know how to use them?  We will teach you to appliqué and to program a stitch sequence that can be saved in the memory function of your machine.  You’ll even learn to do basic free motion quilting and some heirloom techniques with the twin needles and wing needles!

 

Bring your sewing machine, foot control, power cord, all of the accessories that came with your machine, owner’s manual, scissors, two spools of 40 wt. rayon embroidery thread, extra 80/12 or 90/14 universal needles, a bobbin wound with bobbin thread, a twin needle, a wing needle, paper and pen for notes and your eye glasses (if you need them).   Embroidery machine owners do not need to bring the embroidery unit or hoops for this class.

6D Premier Software Club – April 14, 2014

Join us for this 6D Premier Master Class which guides us through the Express Design Wizard in 6D Embroidery Xtra and 6D Premier.  We’ll be looking at creating a design from a background image; and as is the case with most of live there is more than one way to create. We’ll look at several applications and see how they are different and where each would apply.

Learn about the different hoops that are available, placement techniques and other tools that will help you with perfect placement when doing embroidery. See demos on different hoops and how to use them. This will include (but not limited to) the Majestic Hoop, the Endless Hoops, and the new Magnetic Hoop.

Serger Club – Puzzle Blouse

Puzzle Blouse

You will love this pattern once you figure out the puzzle!
This simple-to-serge puzzle blouse can be made in about 20 minutes once you know what you are doing!

Supplies:
Viking Huskylock Serger set up for a 4-thread overlock

Scrap Catcher for your serger

1 to 1 ½ yards lightweight woven fabric (See the cutting instructions for clarification of how much fabric you need)

3 or 4 cones Serger thread to coordinate with your fabric.  You serging will show on the right side of the blouse

Scissors & Pins, etc.

Book:  Simple Serger Sewing.  It’s okay if you don’t have the book 

Cutting instructions:

Our project starts with a square of material.

** Measure your largest part, be it your upper bust, waist or hips.  Purchase fabric that is wide enough and long enough to cut a square of material to match your largest part.  Be sure to leave at least one selvage on your fabric so we can keep track of the length/width of the material.

 If your hips are your largest part and measure 45 inches then you need to purchase 1¼ yard of material that is at least 45 inches wide.

Bring your cut square to class with you.

Gingerbread Man in the hoop design

This gingerbread man has a front and a back. It can be made with a ribbon to hand it.  This ornament can be hung from a tree or used as a gift attached to a present as an extra decoration, even used in a little girl’s or boy’s toy kitchen so they can pretend to cook cookies.

It can also be sewn on a shirt as a decoration. Better yet on a personalized Christmas apron!
