Serger Baby Quilt – April 27 and May 4, 2014 Two session class

This is a two session class.

During the first class, we will piece the quilt top, add the border onto it and fuse it to the batting sandwiching the quilt.  All sewing will be done on the Serger.

Using the Sewing Machine during the second class the quilt will be quilted. and the binding will be made and sewn on or the purchased binding will be sewn on.

We will free motion quilt or use stitch in the ditch to complete the quilting.  We will then trim, if necessary and the binding will be made and sewn on or the purchased binding will be sewn on to finish the quilt.

The $30.00 payment for this two session class will be collected at the time of registration.

Basic introduction to Organizer, which is Complimentary with the purchase of your Husqvarna Viking embroidery machine from Viking Sewing Gallery.  Bring your laptop, and the VIKING USB stick that came with your machine.

The finished quilt will be approximately 49″L x 40″W. We use 6 different fabrics.  Each bloc gives specific fabric, notions, feet, accessories and cutting requirements as well as insrtuctions to make each block. We will start with Block 1 of 12.

Block 4  – using the Yan Couching Feet Set includes two feet for different size opening. This foot is designed to work with machines that have the Exclusive Sensor System feature.

Bring sewing machine and feet if you already own them or you can try them during class. Also bring scraps of fabric, yarn for couching and thread for bobbin and top thread to try the technique.

Block 2  – is using the Gimping Foot to crate dimensional sation stitch technique. Also using Open Toe Foot or Clear Open Toe Foot to stitch decorative stitch around the leaves.

For this adventure embroidery lovers, we will be practicing the art of multiple applique in the form of an adorable playful kitty from our “cat’s Meow” design set from Lunch Box Quilts.  We will go over how to read the design on your machine, placement of fabric, cutting and trimming, and finally finishing the project.Applique Kitty

Serger Basics

That funny looking machine with all of the threads can be so enjoyable to use after you learn the basics.  In this class, you will learn how to thread your serger, balance the stitch,  serge a rolled hem, change the needles, and care for it.  Don’t let it intimidate you.  Once you master these techniques, you can serge miles and miles of stitches to make gorgeous things.  Join us in this class to overcome your fears and/or frustration of using your serger.

 

This class is for owners of any model of serger as long as you have a manual.

 

Bring:

  • Your serger, foot control, power cord, all of the tools and accessories that came with it and the owner’s manual–be sure to bring your tweezers and screwdriver!
  • Scissors
  • A spool or cone of red, green, yellow and blue threads.  These different colors of thread will be your “training wheels” until you master threading and tension.
  • Extra needles that fit your serger (size 80/12 or 90/14)
  • A small make-up or dental mirror
  • If you have difficulty seeing inside your serger, be sure to bring your eye glasses and a flashlight.
  • If you did not buy your serger at this store, bring your sales receipt.  There is a charge for this class if you did not buy from a Viking Sewing Gallery.
  • Paper and pen for notes
