Quilt Fun-da-Mentals #5–Piecing Hexagons

In class #5 you will learn how to piece hexagons while making the Grandmother’s Flower Garden block.  You will also learn how to make your own pattern pieces and applique the “flower” to a background.

 

Supply List:

  • Fat quarter or piece of one dark solid fabric
  • Fat quarter or piece of one print fabric
  • 1 – 13” square of a light or white solid background fabric
  • 1 – 13” square of Tear A-Way stabilizer
  • Sewing thread
  • Sewing machine with foot control and power cord
  • Fabric cutting scissors  (*Available in the Viking Sewing Gallery)
  • Paper cutting scissors
  • Rotary Cutter  (*Available in the Viking Sewing Gallery)
  • Sewing pins
  • Pin cushion or Grabbit
  • Transparent cutting ruler (12″ is ideal)
  • ¼” grid graph paper
  • Mechanical pencil or pencil with sharp lead
  • Lightweight cardboard (like a cereal box)
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Ruler with 60º angle on it OR a protractor
  • Plain copy paper—1 or 2 sheets
  • Hex N More template (optional but nice to have)  (*Available in the Viking Sewing Gallery)
  • Basic sewing kit

Preshrink and press fabric before class.
